In addition to the numerous health benefits of essential oils, they can also help to calm stress and anxiety. The emotional therapy that essential oils can give you depends of course on the type of oil that is used. The brain’s Limbic System (the part of the brain that controls our emotions) is connected to 50 million smell receptors that are inside your nose. The Limbic System is responsible for memory, emotions, and even sexual arousal.
We all deal with stress in our lives on a daily basis to some degree. We go through seasons or periods of time that are really tough on us. For that reason knowing how strong your Limbic System is, can help you identify and utilize the appropriate essential oils to help nurture your mind and body while battling periods of stress, depression, and anxiety.
When dealing with moments of stress and anxiety, the quickest way to find relief is to use the oils aromatically. We see that our Limbic System is loaded with millions of receptors in our nose, so by sniffing an oil or diffusing it into the air, we are able to find a fast relief. Coincidentally, they smell great too!
Here's our top 7 to keep in mind and to always have on-hand...
#1 - Lavender – We are all familiar with the therapeutic benefits of Lavender oil as it can calm and relax. It makes it a no-brainer for anxiety. Use Lavender to help you sleep. Diffuse in the air by your bed, apply 1-2 drops to feet before bed, and add 1-2 drops on your pillow at night.
#2 - Frankincense – Ah, Frankincense – the King of Oils. Frankincense is the most valuable essential oil for slowing and deepening breathing, helping to allay fear, anxiety, nervous tension and stress. When in doubt, use Frankincense. This is a great oil for everyday use to help maintain overall cellular balance, and also for those times of extreme anxiety. Diffuse, inhale, rub 1-2 drops on feet and back of neck mixed with lavender.
#3 - Orange - As with all citrus oils, orange is a great mood lifter. It relieves anxiety, anger, and irritation often because of enhanced circulation and detoxifying of liver, and gall bladder.Rub on the back of neck or bottoms of feet, and then follow that up with peppermint when you feel that dark heavy anxiety starting to build.
#4 - Lemon – Lemon is another extremely versatile oil, but has been proven to help with anxiety. Lemon Oil is radiant, uplifting, reviving and stimulating. Lemon inspires trust and a sense of security; it relieves confusion and worry. It can help you overcome obstacles and provide a clearer perspective. Use this everyday in your water. Just add 1 drop to a glass of water and continue throughout the day.
#5 - Happy - This is such a wonderful calming blend that promotes a sense of well-being and relaxation. Happy is a perfect blend of Bergamot, Neroli, Grapefruit and YlangYlang... Happy is quite effective for helping with anxiety, anger, depression, stress and tension while promoting happiness, centering and the flow of positive energy. Also helps to ease muscle fatigue and stiffness as well as nervous exhaustion. Great for use in vaporizers, oil burners, compresses, creating custom massage and body care products as well as all other aspects of aromatherapy.

Relieve Nervous and Agitated Feelings: Lavender 3 drops, Orange 2 drops and Bergamot 1 drop added to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil; gently blend and apply to forearms with an expectation of feeling Peace and renewed energy.
Anxiety Relief Blend [inhale]: Frankincense 2 drops, Marjoram 2 drops, Geranium 3 drops, Clary Sage 3 drops, Orange 2 drops; mix and inhale – apply to back of neck and RELAX & ENJOY!
Anti-Anxiety Blend [diffuse]: Orange Oil 5 drops, Patchouli 6 drops, Frankincense 6 drops, Geranium 8 drops, Bergamot 10 drops and Clary Sage 12 drops; Blend in an amber glass bottle and gently roll between hands and then add 4-6 drops to your diffuser and enjoy.
Anti-Aggression Blend [apply topically]: 1 Tbsp coconut oil (or your favorite carrier), Lemon 2 drops, Bergamot 4 drops, Ylang Ylang 3 drops, Sandalwood 2 drops, Melissa 1 drop.
